Description

This Puppy Chow recipe features crispy Rice Chex cereal coated in a luscious mixture of melted semi-sweet chocolate, creamy peanut butter, and butter, then dusted generously with powdered sugar. It's a quick and easy no-bake snack or dessert that's perfect for last-minute gatherings or a sweet treat to share with family and friends.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 5 cups Rice Chex cereal
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (more if desired)

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup creamy peanut butter
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cereal: Pour the 5 cups of Rice Chex cereal into a large bowl and set it aside to prepare for coating.
  2. Melt Chocolate Mixture: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, ½ cup creamy peanut butter, and 3 tablespoons butter. Microwave for 1 minute, then stir until melted and smooth. If necessary, microwave for an additional 15 seconds. Alternatively, melt the mixture over a double boiler. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly for 1-2 minutes.
  3. Add Vanilla: Stir 1 teaspoon vanilla extract into the melted chocolate mixture to enhance the flavor.
  4. Coat Cereal: Pour the chocolate mixture over the prepared Rice Chex cereal. Stir gently but thoroughly, ensuring every piece is evenly coated. Let the mixture sit for a couple of minutes before moving on to the next step.
  5. Dust with Powdered Sugar: Place half (½ cup) of the powdered sugar into a large zip-top or brown paper bag. Add the chocolate-coated cereal into the bag, then add the remaining ½ cup powdered sugar on top. Seal the bag securely and shake vigorously until the cereal is completely coated with powdered sugar. Add more powdered sugar if a thicker coating is desired.
  6. Set and Serve: Pour the coated puppy chow onto a piece of wax paper and spread it out to set for about 20 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Variation: Feel free to customize with additions like peanut butter M&M’s, extra chocolate chips, chopped Oreos, nuts, or mini marshmallows for added texture and flavor.
  • Storage: Store puppy chow in an airtight container or zip-top bag at room temperature for up to 1 week. For longer storage, keep it in the freezer for up to 3 months.
