Description

This rich and smooth Chocolate Satin Frosting is perfect for topping cakes with a silky, luscious finish. Made with melted unsweetened chocolate, powdered sugar, butter, and an egg, it achieves a creamy texture by whipping over an ice bath, creating a decadent and glossy frosting ideal for an 8-inch cake.

Ingredients

Chocolate Base

  • 3 1/2 ounces unsweetened baking chocolate

Sweeteners & Liquids

  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 4 1/2 tablespoons hot water

Dairy & Flavorings

  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Melt the chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the unsweetened baking chocolate by heating it in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until the chocolate is completely smooth and fully melted.
  2. Combine ingredients: Add the powdered sugar and hot water to the melted chocolate. Beat in the room temperature egg, unsalted butter, and vanilla extract, mixing thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps.
  3. Thicken the frosting: The frosting will initially be thin. Place the bowl containing the frosting into a larger bowl filled with ice and a bit of water to create an ice bath. Whip the frosting vigorously over the ice bath until it thickens to a spreadable consistency.
  4. Frost your cake: Use the thickened chocolate satin frosting to decorate your Feathery Fudge Cake or any 8-inch cake of your choice. Enjoy the luscious, smooth texture!

Notes

  • Ensure the egg is at room temperature for even mixing and safer incorporation.
  • Whipping over an ice bath cools the frosting quickly and helps achieve a smooth, thick texture.
  • This frosting contains raw egg, so it is recommended for those comfortable consuming eggs that are not fully cooked.
  • Store any leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, and bring to room temperature before using.
  • The recipe yields about 3 cups, enough to frost a standard 8-inch cake completely.
