Ingredients
Basic Oatmeal
- 1 cup water
- ½ cup whole rolled oats
- Pinch sea salt
- Cinnamon, nutmeg, and/or cardamom, optional
- Honey or maple syrup, optional
Variation 1: Apple & Tart Cherry
- Thinly sliced apple
- Frozen tart cherries, thawed
- Chopped almonds
Variation 2: Blueberry & Coconut
- Frozen blueberries, thawed
- Orange zest
- Greek yogurt
- Chia seeds
- Coconut flakes
Instructions
- Combine Ingredients: In a small pot, stir together the water, rolled oats, and a pinch of sea salt to prepare the oatmeal base.
- Cook the Oatmeal: Place the pot over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Then reduce the heat to medium-low and cook, stirring occasionally, for 2 to 5 minutes until the oatmeal becomes thick and creamy.
- Add Spices: Stir in a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, and/or cardamom if desired to add warm flavors to your oatmeal.
- Let Stand: Remove the pot from heat and allow the oatmeal to stand for 1 minute to thicken further and cool slightly.
- Serve with Sweetener: Serve hot, drizzling honey or maple syrup on top if you like added sweetness.
- Apple & Tart Cherry Variation: Top the oatmeal with thinly sliced apples, thawed tart cherries, and chopped almonds for a fruity and crunchy texture.
- Blueberry & Coconut Variation: Garnish the oatmeal with thawed blueberries, orange zest, a scoop of Greek yogurt, chia seeds, and coconut flakes for a tropical twist.
Notes
- Use whole rolled oats for the best creamy texture; quick oats will cook faster but may be less creamy.
- Adjust cooking time and liquid amount for thicker or thinner oatmeal consistency as preferred.
- The spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom) are optional but add lovely warmth and depth.
- Feel free to swap out toppings with your favorite seasonal fruits and nuts.
- Greek yogurt in the blueberry variation adds protein and creaminess but can be omitted for a dairy-free option.
