Description
This easy apple crisp recipe features juicy, cinnamon-spiced apples baked under a buttery, brown sugar oat topping. Perfect for fall, it’s a classic dessert that pairs wonderfully with vanilla ice cream for a warm, comforting treat.
Ingredients
For the Apples
- 6 large apples (2½ pounds), peeled, cored, and chopped into ¾-inch pieces
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon sea salt
Crumble Topping
- ¾ cup whole rolled oats
- ½ cup all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon sea salt
- ½ cup cold unsalted butter (1 stick), cubed, plus more for greasing the pan
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease an 8x8-inch baking dish with butter to prevent sticking.
- Prepare the Apples: In a large bowl, combine the chopped apples with flour, brown sugar, lemon juice, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sea salt. Toss thoroughly until the apples are evenly coated. Spread the mixture in an even layer in the prepared baking dish.
- Make the Topping: In a medium bowl, whisk together the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and sea salt. Using two forks, a pastry cutter, or your hands, incorporate the cold cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle this crumble topping evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
- Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, until the apples are bubbling and beginning to soften.
- Uncover and Finish Baking: Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and lightly crisp, and apples are tender.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and allow the apple crisp to cool for at least 10 minutes to set before serving. It’s delicious on its own or topped with vanilla ice cream.
Notes
- Use tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best flavor and texture.
- Peeling the apples is optional but helps create a smoother texture in the dessert.
- The topping can be made ahead and refrigerated until ready to use.
- For extra crunch, add chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts to the topping.
- Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat before serving.
