Ingredients
Whoopie Pie Batter
- 1 15.25oz box Devil's Food cake mix
- 3/4 cup water
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 3 eggs
- 1 4-serving box chocolate fudge instant pudding mix
Icing and Decorations
- 2 16 oz tubs vanilla cake icing
- Orange food coloring gel
- Edible black glitter
- Powdered sugar (for stenciling)
- Black licorice (for spider legs)
- Candy eyes
Instructions
- Preheat Oven. Start by preheating your oven to 350°F to ensure it's at the right temperature when you're ready to bake the whoopie pies.
- Mix Batter. In a large mixing bowl, combine the devil's food cake mix, water, vegetable oil, eggs, and chocolate fudge instant pudding mix. Beat the mixture on medium speed until all ingredients are well blended and smooth.
- Portion Batter. For larger whoopie pies, scoop 18 evenly sized round portions of batter onto Silpat-lined baking sheets. For smaller ones, scoop 36 smaller circles. This ensures uniform baking.
- Bake. Place the baking sheets in the oven and bake for 7 to 10 minutes, timing depending on the size of the whoopie pies. Bake until the cakes spring back slightly when touched.
- Cool. Remove from oven and allow the cakes to cool completely on a wire rack before decorating. This prevents the icing from melting.
- Color the Icing. Mix the vanilla cake icing with orange food coloring gel until the desired orange color is achieved and well blended.
- Assemble Whoopie Pies. Pipe a generous amount of the orange-colored icing onto the flat side of one cake, then top with another cake to form a sandwich.
- Decorate. Sprinkle edible black glitter over the whoopie pies for a spooky effect. Use black licorice pieces as spider legs by placing them into the icing before adding the top cake, and stick on candy eyes using a dab of icing for cute Halloween spiders.
- Stencil Designs (Optional). For extra decoration, use Halloween-themed stencils and sift powdered sugar over the whoopie pies to create festive patterns. Remove stencil carefully to reveal the design.
Notes
- This recipe makes approximately 18 small whoopie pies or 9 large whoopie pies.
- To stencil designs onto the whoopie pies, use small Halloween-themed stencils and powdered sugar sifted over the stencil. Remove stencil carefully for clear patterns.
- For making Halloween whoopie pie spiders, use 8 pieces of black licorice for legs laid on the icing before topping with the second cake. Use a little extra icing to stick candy eyes on top. Optionally, color the icing black or use chocolate-flavored icing for a spookier look.
- Let the whoopie pies cool completely before decorating to avoid melting the icing.
