Description

Heavenly Squares are a delightful layered treat featuring a buttery graham cracker crust mixed with coconut and walnuts, topped with a fluffy vanilla frosting and a rich chocolate layer. Perfect for parties or a sweet snack, these bars combine multiple textures and flavors into one irresistible dessert.

Ingredients

Bar Layer

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 cup flaked coconut
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts

Frosting

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons milk
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Chocolate Layer

  • 12 oz chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the bar layer.
  2. Prepare Bar Mixture: In a mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together 1/2 cup butter and 1/2 cup granulated sugar until creamy. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until combined. Stir in the graham cracker crumbs, flaked coconut, and chopped walnuts thoroughly.
  3. Form Base Layer: Press the mixture evenly into a 9x13-inch baking pan, ensuring the layer is compact and smooth.
  4. Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes or until the bars are set and golden brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely.
  5. Prepare Frosting: While bars cool, beat 1/2 cup unsalted butter using an electric mixer until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, followed by milk. Beat the frosting for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy.
  6. Apply Frosting: Spread the frosting evenly over the cooled bar layer. For easier chocolate spreading later, you may chill the bars after frosting.
  7. Melt Chocolate Layer: Microwave the chocolate chips in 30-second intervals, stirring between each until fully melted. Stir in 2 tablespoons of butter until smooth.
  8. Spread Chocolate: Pour the melted chocolate mixture evenly over the frosting layer, smoothing it out with a spatula.
  9. Set and Serve: Allow the chocolate to set at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Once firm, slice into squares and serve. Enjoy your Heavenly Squares!

Notes

  • Chilling the bars after frosting and before adding the chocolate layer can make spreading easier and neater.
  • Ensure the bars are fully cooled before frosting to prevent melting.
  • Use unsalted butter for frosting to control the saltiness of the bars.
  • Substitute walnuts with other nuts if preferred, keeping in mind allergy considerations.
  • Store bars in an airtight container at room temperature or refrigerated for longer freshness.
