Description
Discover the perfect grilled cheese sandwich recipe that delivers a crispy, golden exterior and a deliciously gooey, melty cheesy middle. This easy-to-make classic is enhanced with layers of sharp cheddar and Gruyère or raclette cheese, complemented by a spread of mayonnaise and Dijon mustard for extra flavor. Ideal for a quick meal, especially paired with tomato soup.
Ingredients
Sandwich Ingredients
- 2 slices sourdough bread
- Mayonnaise, thinly spread
- Dijon mustard, thinly spread
- 1 to 2 ounces grated sharp cheddar cheese (adjust according to bread size)
- 1 to 2 ounces grated Gruyère or raclette cheese (adjust according to bread size)
For Cooking
- Butter, enough to coat the pan
Instructions
- Prepare the bread: Place the two slices of sourdough bread on a cutting board. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the top side of both slices.
- Apply mustard and cheese: Flip one slice so the mayo side is down, then spread Dijon mustard on the side facing up. Layer the grated sharp cheddar and Gruyère or raclette cheeses evenly on top of the mustard.
- Assemble the sandwich: Place the other slice of bread on top of the layered cheese, mayonnaise side facing outward, forming the sandwich.
- Heat the skillet and melt butter: Warm a nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium-low heat. Add enough butter to coat the bottom of the pan evenly.
- Cook the sandwich - first side: Place the sandwich in the pan and cover with a lid. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes until the bottom slice is golden brown and crisp.
- Flip and cook second side: Carefully flip the sandwich, replace the lid, and cook for another 1 to 3 minutes until the other side is golden brown and the cheese inside is fully melted. Reduce heat to low if the bread browns too quickly.
- Slice and serve: Remove the sandwich from the pan, slice as desired, and serve immediately for best melty texture and crispiness.
Notes
- Using a cast-iron skillet helps in achieving an evenly crisp crust.
- Covering the pan traps heat and helps melt the cheese perfectly.
- You can substitute sourdough with other sturdy bread like country white or whole wheat if desired.
- Adjust cheese quantity based on bread size and personal preference for cheesiness.
- Serve with tomato soup for a classic combination.
