Description
Learn how to make perfectly cooked black beans in the Instant Pot with this easy and hands-off recipe. Cooking dried black beans from scratch has never been faster or simpler, producing tender and flavorful beans in under an hour.
Ingredients
Beans and Liquids
- 2 cups dried black beans
- 6 cups water
Aromatics and Spices
- Heaping ½ cup diced white onion
- 2 large garlic cloves, chopped
- 2 teaspoons sea salt
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Optional
- Fresh lime juice, for serving
Instructions
- Sort and Rinse Beans: Place the dried black beans in a large colander and carefully remove any stones or debris. Rinse the beans thoroughly under cold water.
- Combine Ingredients: Transfer the rinsed beans to the Instant Pot. Add 6 cups of water, diced white onion, chopped garlic, sea salt, chili powder, ground cumin, dried oregano, and several grinds of freshly ground black pepper.
- Cook Beans: Secure the lid on the Instant Pot. Set it to Pressure Cook on High for 25 minutes if you want tender beans, or 20 minutes if you prefer them firmer.
- Natural Pressure Release: Allow the Instant Pot to naturally release pressure for 20 to 30 minutes. When the float valve drops, it is safe to remove the lid.
- Season and Serve: Taste the beans and adjust seasoning with additional salt, pepper, and fresh lime juice if desired. Serve the beans as a side dish or use them in your favorite recipes.
Notes
- Adjust cooking time based on your preferred bean texture: shorter for firmer beans, longer for softer.
- Natural pressure release is important to ensure the beans finish cooking gently and remain intact.
- Soaking beans is not required when using the Instant Pot, streamlining the preparation process.
- Add fresh lime juice just before serving for a bright, fresh flavor.
- Store cooked beans in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for longer storage.
