Description

Learn how to make perfectly cooked black beans in the Instant Pot with this easy and hands-off recipe. Cooking dried black beans from scratch has never been faster or simpler, producing tender and flavorful beans in under an hour.

Ingredients

Beans and Liquids

  • 2 cups dried black beans
  • 6 cups water

Aromatics and Spices

  • Heaping ½ cup diced white onion
  • 2 large garlic cloves, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Optional

  • Fresh lime juice, for serving

Instructions

  1. Sort and Rinse Beans: Place the dried black beans in a large colander and carefully remove any stones or debris. Rinse the beans thoroughly under cold water.
  2. Combine Ingredients: Transfer the rinsed beans to the Instant Pot. Add 6 cups of water, diced white onion, chopped garlic, sea salt, chili powder, ground cumin, dried oregano, and several grinds of freshly ground black pepper.
  3. Cook Beans: Secure the lid on the Instant Pot. Set it to Pressure Cook on High for 25 minutes if you want tender beans, or 20 minutes if you prefer them firmer.
  4. Natural Pressure Release: Allow the Instant Pot to naturally release pressure for 20 to 30 minutes. When the float valve drops, it is safe to remove the lid.
  5. Season and Serve: Taste the beans and adjust seasoning with additional salt, pepper, and fresh lime juice if desired. Serve the beans as a side dish or use them in your favorite recipes.

Notes

  • Adjust cooking time based on your preferred bean texture: shorter for firmer beans, longer for softer.
  • Natural pressure release is important to ensure the beans finish cooking gently and remain intact.
  • Soaking beans is not required when using the Instant Pot, streamlining the preparation process.
  • Add fresh lime juice just before serving for a bright, fresh flavor.
  • Store cooked beans in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for longer storage.
