Description

This Popeye Spinach recipe is a quick and flavorful way to prepare fresh spinach with a delightful sesame, honey, and soy sauce glaze. Perfect as a nutritious side dish, it balances a light sweetness with savory notes, finished with a toasted sesame crunch that enhances the vibrant, tender spinach.

Ingredients

Spinach and Seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon salt, plus extra to season
  • 14 oz fresh spinach, stems removed
  • Black pepper to taste

Sesame Glaze

  • 3 1/2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 ½ tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Water: Fill a stockpot halfway with water and add 1 teaspoon of salt. Bring it to a low boil to prepare for blanching the spinach.
  2. Blanch the Spinach: Add the fresh spinach to the boiling water and cook for 1-2 minutes until the leaves become bright green. Avoid overcooking to maintain texture and nutrients. Drain the spinach well.
  3. Toast the Sesame Seeds: In a dry skillet over medium-low heat, cook the sesame seeds until they turn golden, about 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
  4. Make the Sesame Glaze: Combine the toasted sesame seeds with honey and soy sauce in a bowl, mixing until well blended to create a flavorful glaze.
  5. Sauté the Spinach: Add 1 teaspoon olive oil to the skillet and increase the heat to medium. Add the blanched spinach and cook for 1-2 minutes until heated through, stirring gently to coat.
  6. Season and Finish: Add salt and black pepper to taste, then pour in the sesame glaze, mixing thoroughly. Serve the spinach hot to enjoy the full depth of flavor.

Notes

  • Do not overcook the spinach to preserve its vibrant color and nutritional value.
  • Toasting sesame seeds slowly over medium-low heat ensures a fragrant and nutty flavor without burning.
  • This dish is best served immediately while warm.
  • Adjust soy sauce and honey quantities to taste for desired sweetness and saltiness.
  • Can be served as a side dish for both vegetarian and diabetic-friendly meals.
