Description
Tamago Kake Gohan is a comforting Japanese-inspired rice bowl perfect for a healthy breakfast or dinner. Hot brown rice is combined with raw egg, which gently cooks into a creamy, risotto-like texture when stirred vigorously, and seasoned with tamari and topped with scallions, sesame seeds, and optional toppings for extra flavor.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 2 to 3 cups very hot cooked brown rice
- 2 eggs
- Splashes of tamari (to taste)
- 1 scallion, finely chopped
- Sesame seeds, for sprinkling
Optional Toppings
- Extra egg yolks
- Thinly sliced nori
- Japanese pickles or pickled ginger
- Microgreens
- Splash of rice vinegar or umeboshi vinegar
- Avocado slices
- Roasted broccoli
Other
- Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Rice: Scoop the hot cooked brown rice evenly into two serving bowls. Ensure the rice is piping hot to gently cook the egg upon mixing.
- Add Egg and Tamari: Crack one egg into each bowl of hot rice. Add splashes of tamari sauce according to your taste preference.
- Mix to Cook: Stir the egg and rice mixture vigorously and rapidly. This motion gently cooks the egg using the residual heat of the rice, resulting in a creamy, risotto-like consistency that coats the rice.
- Add Toppings: Top each bowl with finely chopped scallions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Add any optional toppings such as extra egg yolks, sliced nori, Japanese pickles or pickled ginger, microgreens, a splash of rice or umeboshi vinegar, avocado slices, or roasted broccoli as desired.
- Serve: Serve immediately while hot, with additional tamari on the side for extra seasoning if preferred.
Notes
- Use freshly cooked, very hot rice to ensure the egg cooks properly and safely.
- Adjust tamari quantity based on your salt preference and dietary restrictions.
- Optional toppings can add texture, flavor, and nutritional variety.
- For a richer taste, add extra egg yolks as a topping.
- This dish is best consumed immediately after preparation to enjoy the creamy texture.
